Living in a Group Home
Group homes are where more than one person lives in a house with staff.
- Group homes are run by the local Council, Health Trust or by Private Companies.
- In a group home your rent is usually paid by the Council or Government.
- You should have a say in choosing who works in the home.
- You have rights because this is where you live.
- There will be a Home Manager who is responsible for you getting your rights.
- Sometimes group homes try to restrict your independence.
Your Rights in a Group Home
Living in a Care Home or Group Home you still have rights.
You should have a choice about...
- Who you share the house with.
- Who the staff are.
- What activities you would do during the day and in the evening.
- Coming and going when you want.
- How the house and your room is decorated.
- What time you go to bed and what time you get up.
- Having a relationship and privacy.
- What food you have to eat.
Your Responsibilities in a Group Home
Living in a Care Home or Group Home you have responsibilities.
Where possible you should be involved in...
- Getting along with your house mates.
- Interviewing for new staff and appraising staff.
- Making choices about day and evening activities and working to arrange them.
- Making sure where you go out is safe.
- Keeping the house tidy and doing the cleaning.
- Respecting when your other housemates want quiet so they can sleep.
- Going to private places if you are going to have sex.
- Respecting other people privacy, knock before going into their room.
- Cooking dinner and doing the dishes.
